Walnut and Date Loaf

Ingredients

  • 6oz Self raising flour
  • 2 oz wholemeal flour
  • pinch of salt
  • 1 1/2 oz Sainsbury free from margarine
  • 3 oz  stoned dates
  • 1 oz walnuts
  • 1/2 teaspoon bicarbonate of soda
  • 4 oz golden syrup
  • 2-3 tablespoons soya or rice milk

Method

  • Mix the flours and salt together and rub in the margarine. Add the dates and nuts.
  • Dissolve the bicarbonate of soda in a little milk. Slightly warm the syrup.
  • Make a well in the centre of the dry ingredients and add the syrup and bicarbonate of soda with enough milk to make a light,sticky dough.
  • Turn it into a greased and floured bread tin and bake at 375 f, for about an hour until well risen and firm underneath
