Halli - Leicester City Centre

Southern Indian Restaurant

www.hallirestaurant.com.
‘Halli’ in Leicester is an unusual Indian restaurant which has Southern Indian style dishes and is quite different and has a fresher (and less oily) taste to Tandoori restaurants (much as I love them). Everything on their menu is vegetarian and much of it is vegan and gluten-free (even pancake type things). Sue and I have eaten there and enjoyed dishes such as ‘Bonda’ - a savoury mini-doughnut, ‘idili’ - a rice sponge with a tiny bowls of dips, pakora (chopped vegetables in batter) and cashew-nuts in a crunchy batter. Plus main course dishes of coconut rice, lemon rice, ‘channa masala’ (chickpeas in a mildly spiced sauce). Spinach and potato, ‘palya’ - a no-sauce mixed vegetable curry and ‘Dosa’ - a rice pancake rolled up with a vegetable filling. There are 8 desserts, mainly dairy based but one ‘Jaggery Dosa’ a pancake smothered in warm cane sugar can be made vegan if you ask when you order it. If enough people ask (in advance of going) they’ll be able to get in some vegan icecream and fruit. All the food we had was lovely and it’s great that you can eat with the confidence that it’s all veggie. Décor wise everything is wood - floor, tables, even the menu has a wooden cover! The restaurant has a light modern feel to it with large windows at the front and elegant contemporary chrome lighting. There is also a room upstairs available to hire out for private functions. They are open for lunch 12-3pm and for dinner 6-11pm. The restaurant is at the top end of Granby Street in Leicester with handy nearby multi-storey car parks or it’s just 5 minutes walk from BHS on Gallowtree Gate.Cheryl Colpman 21 February 2006
