History

The group was started in 2001 by Sue Daniels as she wanted to meet other vegetarians in Leicestershire.  Sue is a fourth generation vegetarian.  She now lives in Australia and is running a thriving vegan group there!

Sue’s mother Gaby was at the first ever Vegan Society meeting with Donald and Dorothy Watson in Leicester.  Donald and Dorothy came up with the word vegan from the beginning and end of the word vegetarian.

The Leicestershire Vegetarian & Vegan group

The Leicestershire Vegetarian & Vegan group met for many years at Friends Meeting House on Queens Road but as cookery demos weren’t allowed there (insurance issues) we moved to the Secular Hall on Humberstone Gate for a few years.  Parking in the city became an issue for many members so after a pause for Covid, a survey and a rethink we moved to the Synagogue in August 2022.  From January 2024 we decided to just get together for ad hoc meals and social events rather than regular official meetings.

Please get in touch if you would like to organise a get-together.
